Bio

Marc Bookman began his writing and his legal career at the same time, publishing short stories while working his way through the various units of the Defender Association of Philadelphia. Three of his short stories were chosen as “Distinguished” in Best American Short Stories by the time he entered the first ever Homicide Unit, where he stayed for 17 years. In 2010 he left the Defender Association to co-found the Atlantic Center for Capital Representation (atlanticcenter.org); that same year he began writing essays about criminal justice in The Atlantic, Mother Jones, Slate, VICE, and other magazines. Eight of those essays were chosen as “Notable” in Best American Essays, and a book of his essays, A Descending Spiral: Exposing the Death Penalty in Twelve Essays, was published by the New Press in 2021. Albert’s Time is his first novel.
